Brian McElroy from Dungannon is getting set to abseil one of Northern Ireland’s most iconic and tallest buildings to raise money for local charity Friends of the Cancer Centre.
Brian is one of the brave people taking on Friends of the Cancer Centre’s Take on the Tower Abseil, which will see supporters from across Northern Ireland abseil 190ft down Belfast City Hospital’s famous yellow tower block on Saturday, April 22.
Brian is now calling on the people of Dungannon to follow his lead and sign-up to take on Northern Ireland’s 4th tallest building to help support the great work of Friends of the Cancer Centre.
Brian, who is HR Manager at Genesis Crafty in Magherafelt, is delighted to be taking part in the abseil and looking ahead to the event, he said: “As a company, Genesis Crafty is supporting Friends of the Cancer Centre and all of our employees are being encouraged to join in and take on their own challenge to support this fantastic charity helping local people affected by cancer.
“I’ve never done an abseil before, so this is a real challenge for me as I’m not that fond of heights. I’m doing it because I, like many others, have been unfortunate in losing a close relative to cancer and know the fantastic work that Friends of the Cancer Centre do to support patients and their families.
“While I’m nervous about the challenge, I’m also really excited and I know the money that I raise will make a huge difference to Friends of the Cancer Centre.”
Friends of the Cancer Centre’s Fundraising Manager, Claire Hogarth said: “Over the past two years, nearly 400 people from across Northern Ireland have conquered one of Northern Ireland’s most iconic buildings by taking part in our Take on the Tower Abseil. This year we want to make the event bigger and better and that’s why we are calling on thrill seekers from across the province to Take on the Tower for us and raise vital funds for local cancer patients and their families. Places are filling up fast so I’d encourage anyone interested in taking part to follow Brian’s lead and sign-up today.”
Registration for the event is £20 per person and each participant is asked to raise a suggested minimum sponsorship of £100 for the charity. Participants must be over 14 years of age. If you would like to Take on the Tower you can register online at www.friendsofthecancercentre.com or call 028 9069 9393 to find out more.
