Cookstown chef killed in road accident near Lissan

The pedestrian killed in a collision with a red Mercedes near Cookstown on Monday night has been named as Brian McGinn, from Cookstown.

The accident took place just before midnight on the Lissan Road.

Inspector Robert McGowan would like to hear from witnesses to the collision or anyone who can help the investigation. The number to call is 101.

Police said he was struck by the car as he made his way home from town around 11.45pm and are appealing for witnesses to come forward - especially the driver of a dark Volkswagen car.

Brian, who was in his fifties and worked as head chef at the Mill Wheel Bar on the Dunnamore Road, has been described as the “heart and soul around here”.

Manager Raymond Loughran told the Mail it was “a terrible shock” for everyone at the bar when they found out Brian had died.

“Everybody is just in total shock,” he said, “our own staff and the whole community because he was the heart and soul around here.

“Everyone was very fond of him, fond of the craic and the food.”

Funeral arrangements later.
