Cookstown man couldn’t remember exposing genitals on street

A Cookstown man has received a suspended prison sentence after he was discovered with his trousers and underwear around his ankles in the middle of town.

Michael Gerard Patrick O’Hare, 28, from Forth Glen, unclothed himself on James Street around 2.40am on December 1 last year

Police reported that he was jumping up and down in the middle of the road baring his genitals and backside.

The defendant subsequently told the police that it was “meant as a joke” and that he did not remember the incident due to the effects of alcohol.

Mr Liam McStay, defending, told the court that his client recognised that he had a problem with alcohol and had addressed it by attending AA and by staying away from drink.

He said that Mr O’Hare had a good employment record and came from a solid family background. He said that Mr O’Hare attended court with his partner who was “disappointed and embarrassed” by the incident.

District Judge John Meehan said, “This is your second appearance for this sort of behaviour - you need to realise that this behaviour is repugnant...alcohol abuse is neither acceptable or inexcusable.”

He then handed down a sentence of two months in prison which he suspended for two years, a fine of £100 and a court levy of £15. Bail for appeal was set at £200.
