Dungannon and South Tyrone Borough Council in conjunction with Dungannon Regeneration Partnership (DRP) and Dungannon Traders Association have launched a brand new initiative to champion Dungannon town as a retail leader.

The new ‘Shop Smart’ campaign focuses on the benefits of shopping in the town and supporting local retailers as well as highlighting the vital role that local business plays in shaping the economy.

Mayor of Dungannon and South Tyrone Borough Council, Councillor Sean McGuigan, said:

“Dungannon town is well positioned within the Borough and its infrastructure has attracted both local and international businesses to invest here over the years. We are urging consumers to make shopping smart and shopping locally in Dungannon a resolution for 2014 and beyond.

“The town offers a vibrant mix of smaller, independently owned businesses as well as high street favourites. Local businesses have also been proven to strengthen the economic base of a community in many ways. Spending your money closer to home even during tough economic times can strengthen local neighbourhoods and the surrounding areas. For every £1 spent locally, an average of 50-70p recirculates back into the local economy.

“Our ‘Shop Smart’ campaign supports independent businesses, saves you travelling time, reduces fuel costs and allows you to experience the expert services and friendliness that the town brings to visitors all year around.”

Dungannon is central to Mid Ulster and although the high street has suffered in recent years, the town continues to maintain a rich mix of businesses, retailers and history for the whole family to enjoy.

All shops are within walking distance of one another and car parking is plentiful, with a whopping 242 completely free car parking spaces in the various car parks with approximately further 220 free 60 minute street parking spaces, available for those shorter shopping messages. For those longer messages 281 Pay & Display car parking spaces are available in the town centre all of which are very close to the main shopping area. So think local, park local and buy local.

Stephen Mohan, Chairman of Dungannon Traders Association added; “Supporting your local town means protecting local jobs and boosting the economy and we firmly believe that Dungannon has a positive story to share.

“The town offers shoppers a unique visitor experience and it is a great shopping destination. With a fantastic variety of family owned, individual business coupled with award winning restaurants and the multimillion pound Ranfurly House Arts and Visitor Centre- there has never been a better time to shop smart and explore all that this town as to offer.”
