Dungannon Rotary Club launched an appeal in 2008 for unwanted bikes to be donated as part of their Jole Ryder Bikes 4 Africa Project, and the response has been phenomenal.
The Rotary club sent a container of 360 bikes and hundreds of books to help the Gambian children in Africa and they subsequently won the Rotary International Award for the most innovative project in Ireland.
Dungannon Rotary Club recently loaded it’s 1000th bike, collected as part of their continued contribution to Rotary’s Jole Rider Bikes 4 Africa project.
Bicycles were collected from donors in the Dungannon area and were loaded onto a van supplied by Lisburn Rotary Club for onward transport to Loughan Jail in Co. Cavan. There a small group of inmates will refurbish them prior to shipment to Africa. The Bike Shop in Dungannon generously accumulated and stored the bikes and proprietor Johnny Robinson assisted in the loading operation with help and support from the Rotary Club. These bicycles will be received with great appreciation by the schools in the Gambian region of Africa. Dungannon Rotary club shall continue to support this project and if households have unwanted bicycles and they wish to become part of this project, please hand into The Bike Shop (at Northland roundabout) who will happily accept them.
