Ambitious plans to transform a disused reservoir into a water-sports centre and hydroelectricity plant have taken a major step forward.
NI Water has announced plans transfer the ownership of its reservoirs at Cappagh to the Mid Ulster Council this financial year.
If the moves go ahead, it would give the green light to Cappagh Village Regeneration Group’s plans to create an eco-village at the site.
Sinn Fein Councillor Mickey Gillespie, who is a member of the regeneration group, said that the council had agreed to help with the plans, but that the creation of the new Mid Ulster Council had delayed progress.
The plans have already been raised at a meeting of Dungannon Council’s Strategic Committee.
“The plans are still very much alive, and are going through committees at the momnet. A hydroelectric plant would be a great boon to the area, providing free electricity, and the water-sports centre would draw in a lot of tourists.”
