Hill of The O’Neill and Ranfurly House is the only tourist attraction west of the Bann to be shortlisted for the Best Visitor Attraction in this year’s Blue Insurance Northern Ireland Travel and Tourism Awards.
Mid Ulster’s ‘David’ is set to battle Goliaths - Carrick-a-Rede, Titanic Belfast, and the Giant’s Causeway - to take the title at the Slieve Donard on Friday, October 21.
Chair of Mid Ulster District Council, Councillor Trevor Wilson said: “We’re absolutely delighted that a jewel in the crown of Mid Ulster heritage, which offers a modern view from an ancient site, has been nominated for these prestigious awards.
“Our area has much to offer the culturally curious visitor and this nomination is testament to the importance and value of this site to the region’s tourism product.”
Mid Ulster council has recently extended facilities at the historical site with a brand new events space, conference facilities and a 360° panoramic viewing tower, which affords breath-taking views of seven Ulster counties.
Opened in 2016 as part of a £7m project funded through the European Peace III Shared Spaces Programme, the project was delivered by Mid Ulster District Council and STEP Dungannon.
The exceptional new space developed is open to the public for conferences, concerts, historical talks and events.
Opened since 2012, Ranfurly House also features a multi-media exhibition narrating the story of the Flight of the Earls and the Plantation of Ulster, a spacious Arts Studio, café and gift, craft and souvenir shop with maps, guidebooks and local historical information.
There will be 29 awards presented on the evening, which cover all sectors of the travel and tourism industry and are voted for by both the public and travel trade.
Results will be announced following the awards.
