The last ever mayor of Dungannon and South Tyrone Borough Council has been appointed.

DUP Councillor Rodger Burton has taken up the position of Mayor for the remaining 10 months before the new Mid Ulster Super Council takes over.

Cllr Burton said he was delighted to take on the role, “I would like to thank my party colleagues for the opportunity to be the last ever Mayor of Dungannon and South Tyrone Borough Council and I say that on a sad note,” he said.

He added that the council had still a vital role to play in their final 10 months and had a lot of great things to promote about the district.

Speaking at the monthly council meeting and AGM on Monday night, outgoing mayor Sean McGuigan thanked his fellow councillors and officers saying: “I have really enjoyed my role as Mayor, and appreciate that I have been lucky to have done this twice in my 13 years here.”

Mr McGuigan’s party colleague Dominic Molloy was appointed as Deputy Mayor, taking on the role from Cllr Robert Mulligan.
