DUNGANNON Mayor Michelle O’Neill is the new Minister for Agriculture and Rural Development in Northern Ireland.

She will succeed local MP Michelle Gildernew who has held the post for the past four years.

A native of Clonoe, Michelle O’Neill is a strong republican voice having been involved in politics for most of her adult life, she was proud to become the first female Mayor of Dungannon and South Tyrone in 2010.

Elected to the Assembly in 2007, Michelle held the position of deputy Chair of the Health Committee and was a member of the Edcuation Committee.

In the last Assembly she was party spokesperson on Health and Disability and has worked to champion the equality agenda particularly in relation to these areas.

Being an active community member Michelle has been a rural voice alongside taking an active interest in the areas such as equal access to health services, respite and support for carers.
