Drumcoo Recycling Centre in Dungannon has received a further funding boost from the Rethink Capital Waste Fund.
Mid Ulster Council revealed last week, that an additional grant aid of £27K brings the total to £250,000, money which is on top of the £500K investment by the Council in the refurbishment scheme.
The centre is currently closed to allow the development to take place, which will improve recycling facilities, bring new waste compaction and weighbridge facilities, as well as introduce a new traffic flow system to improve site safety and access.
More work to is also to be carried out to address poor ground conditions which have been identified on the site during the scheme.
Chair of the Council’s Environment Committee, Councillor Christine McFlynn, said: “The additional funding is a boost which means that the facilities at Drumcoo will be second to none when completed.
“We will have increased capacity for accepting more recyclable waste, particularly green waste and electrical and electronic items, as well introducing reuse facilities for furniture and paint.
Councillor McFlynn added: “Carrying out the extra work, and addressing the poor ground conditions which have been discovered, means more time and so the centre’s re-opening will be delayed until June this year.
“This is unfortunate but necessary and to all our customers who have been patient while the renovations have been on-going, I ask for their understanding for just a while longer so we can ensure they will enjoy facilities of the highest quality.”
Since its launch in 2010, the Rethink Waste Capital Fund has seen over £12 million in capital monies allocated by the Department of the Environment (DoE) to fund local authority reuse and recycling projects in order to divert waste from landfill and work towards meeting EU recycling targets. The fund is administered by the Waste Resources Advisory Programme (WRAP) on behalf of DoE.
While the Drumcoo centre is closed, customers are asked to use the recycling centres at Coalisland (Derry Road, please note this is only suitable for cars and cars with trailers), Cookstown (Molesworth Road) and at Tullyvar (Tullyvar Road, Aughnacloy).
