The rise in anti-social behaviour in the Coalisland area has been condemned by a local councillor as “mindless stupidity”.
Mid Ulster councillor Malachy Quinn voiced anger after a number of vehicles were set alight in the area over the past few weeks.
A tractor in Mourne Avenue was set alight ‘deliberately’ last weekend causing two nearby cars to also catch fire.
Just the week before a car was also burned out at the roadside in Killeen, where it was left for five days.
Speaking about the Mourne Avenue incident Cllr Quinn said: “The people involved in this mindless stupidity need to catch themselves on very quickly.
“This was the second such incident in the Coalisland area over the last week and if things like this carry on it will only be a matter of time before someone is hurt.
“It was lucky that no-one was injured, especially firefighters who tackled the blaze, which has happened during these type of incidents elsewhere.
Cllr Quinn continued: “This is not the type of thing the residents of Mourne Avenue or indeed the wider people in Coalisland want to see and it does nothing but drag down the image of the area.
“I have raised my concerns to the PSNI about this incident and the one last week in Killeen and stressed the need that something needs to be done about this.
“Over the last few weeks I have received a number of calls relating to anti-social behaviour in a number of places and the PSNI had assured me that they will be stepping up patrols in the area to try and combat this.”
