Video: TIPSA reaction to ‘neknominations’

“It’s like the ‘Harlem Shake’ and hopefully it’ll pass, but if you get a ‘neknomination’ you should break the chain because these sorts of games are highly dangerous.”

Those are the words of Eugene O’Goan, Project Officer with TIPSA which provides alcohol and drugs education to teenagers and their parents in Cookstown and Magherafelt. He is referring to the internet drinking game ‘neknomination’ which involves participants drinking alcohol while being filmed.

Mr O’Goan took time out to talk to the MAIL about this dangerous craze which has claimed the lives of two people in the Republic of Ireland.

In response, a spokesperson for the Public Health Agency, said social media has increased the effect of peer pressure.

“We need to try to harness this in a positive way, using the media to reinforce messages about the risks of drinking, and how important it is to look after your friends,” she said.
