Just as they did in the League Cup, Gervins A were smartly out of the blocks on the opening night, walloping Mitchells A 4-0. But they’ll want to find that more productive than in the previous competition.

They won’t need reminding that these league format events are not sprints, the ten from twelve points they accrued via three sparkling displays in the season’s pipe-opener flattering only to decive as a last night lapse saw them fail to reach the last four.

But they say that you learn from your mistakes and there was plenty of evidence in the big win over the Cookstown men that they really do mean business. Ciaran Kelly was pushed to a third frame after losing the first on the black to John Currie, but it was all plain sailing thereafter as Anthony McGuckin fired breaks of 58 and 38 in cruising home against Frank Loughran, Seamus Nixon slamming Seamus Mitchell and Darren Gribben with plenty to spare as he conpleted a hat-trick of straight frames wins for the home cuemen.

Kieran Corr has shown only flashes of his form these past couple of seasons, but he demonstrated what an excellent break-builder he is when firing a superb 62 to defeat Shea Fee of Gervins.
