Twenty-two year old Nancie Armstrong is the latest Black Belt from the Ren-Bu-Kan Judo Club, a landmark 40th person from the club to win this prestigious honour.
Nancie is a member since she was a child and has been a senior brown belt for seven years. As such she was able to win points towards a Black belt by defeating opponents of similar or higher grade in competitions such as All Ireland or Irish Open .
Nancie had already accumulated points but at the National Grading in Dublin last weekend the young Pomeroy girl realised her dream when she defeated five others inside the distance to step into club history, only the sixth female from the club to wear the coveted Black belt after Avril Malley, Joyce Malley, Nuala Jones, Cathy O’Neill and Sarah Hawkes.
Four other members were successful at National Grading, Tiffany McDonald and Aaron Armstrong winning the required fights for promotion to senior brown belt and now concentrating on trying to accumulate points towards Black. Mindaugus Vaskevicius and Almantas Masaitas won all their fights to gain Blue belts.
