Dungannon driver Kris Meeke has won Rally Argentina, becoming the first ever Northern Irish driver to win a round of the World Rally Championship.
Meeke and his co-driver, Kerry’s Paul Nagle, closed out victory on the final day to put a run of lacklustre form behind him having finished 10th in Rally Monte Carlo in January and seventh in Sweden before a non-finish in Mexico.
The local driver had 18.1 seconds to spare over his team mate Mads Ostberg who took second place, completing what was a dream weekend for his Citreon team.
An emotional Meeke fought back tears as he paid tribute to his early mentor, the 1995 World champion Colin McRae: “What can I say? It’s been an exceptionally long road. This one’s for Colin.”
Many were beginning to cast doubt that Meeke would add a World Rally Championship round win to his trophy list but his performance over the weekend should silence his critics.
